Cobalt treatment

Tool from the radioactive material "Cobalt 60" was gone from the Kazan Center of Nuclear Medicine.

Radioactive surgical needle size of 2.5 cm x 0.8 mm was gone from the safe closed storage. The needle has a closed loop and a sealed steel casing, therefore not dangerous to others, but must be disposed of in a special pattern.

In 1934, the famous French scientist Frederic and Irene Joliot-Curie discovered the phenomenon of artificial radioactivity. Among the radioactive isotopes of cobalt most widespread practical use came to cobalt-60, that was used to produce sets of surgical instruments.

Its rays are highly penetrating. According to the power of the radiation of radioactive cobalt - 17 grams equivalent to 1 kilogram of radium. That's why in the preparation, storage and transportation of this isotope, for that matter, and other, carefully observe the strictest safety regulations, take all necessary measures to reliably protect people from the deadly rays.

Cobalt-60 - an isotope of cobalt is found in the 1930s. His discovery led to the invention of cobalt guns. One of the most common types of apparatus known as gamma knife, which is a stationary device, capable to deliver radiation to specific areas of the head. Cobalt acts on cancer cells without destroying the adjacent healthy tissues.

Some oncologists prefer to use a new device called a linear accelerator. This mobile device is typically used for the treatment of larger tumors, as it allows them to guide bole high doses of radiation than the gamma knife.

Cobalt compounds impart a deep blue color in ceramic glass, glazes and rich colors, but we are interested in other characteristics in the manufacturing of surgical instrument sets. Once the isotope is cobalt-60 was detected, it was used as an alloying element, as it is able to resist corrosion and to make other metals more durable. This form of the cobalt used in the jewelry industry, in the production of parts for jet aircraft, as well as in sets of surgical instruments and implants.

The alloy "Stellite" contains 35% cobalt, the same amount of chromium, 15% tungsten, 13% iron and 2% carbon and is used for production of ferrules cutters, drills and so on. n., including surgical tool sets.

During the war, the cobalt was used in the creation of heat-resistant steels and alloys for components of aircraft engines, missiles, boilers, high-pressure vane turbochargers and gas turbines. Such alloys was included, for example, "vitallium" - comprising up to 65% cobalt.

Hard metals can serve not only for the manufacturing of sets of cutting surgical instrument. Sometimes you have to weld on hard metal on the surface of the parts subjected to heavy wear during operation of the machine. Such cobalt-based alloy can increase the service life of the steel parts up to 4-8 times.
