How to overcome coronavirus

Как побороть коронавирус

Medical gases and equipment used in the treatment of coronavirus

The Coronaviridae family includes 2 subfamilies and about 40 types of viruses that cause flu-like illnesses. Coronavirus cells have the appearance of a sphere with crown-shaped spikes on the membrane, due to which the virus got its name. It was first detected in 1965 in a patient with acute respiratory infection.

Coronaviruses have a very specific way of penetrating cells: they do not penetrate through the membrane in arbitrary places, like many other viruses, but attack transmembrane cell receptors by simulating S-protein molecules complementary to ACE2 receptors (angiotensin converting enzymes 2). This complicates the recognition of the virus by the immune system. There are many such receptors in the lungs, which explains the clinical picture.

The main peak of the disease occurs in the spring and autumn seasons. The incubation period can be from 3 to 14 days, for the Wuhan virus it is 5 days. The main distribution routes are fecal-oral, aerogenic and contact-household.he complex structure of coronavirus with the largest non-segmented RNA creates additional difficulties with vaccination. Immunity is unstable, repeated infections are likely. Virus is very contagious and asymptomatic for a long time. Immunocompromised people, the elderly and small children are getting sick 7 times more often than other age groups. Basically, the disease proceeds in a mild respiratory form. Pneumonia and sepsis develop in a small number of people at risk. Mostly, deaths are occure due to the late medical help.

Today, the treatment and prevention of the disease is to bring down the temperature, anesthetize, replenish electrolytes and treat a respiratory failure.

The virus is easily transmitted from person to person, but does not live in the environment for a long time. Therefore, WHO recommends observing quarantine and a safe distance of 2 meters. Virus particles remain in the aerosol for 8-10 hours, in water - up to 9 days. Masks are ineffective against the disease, as they get wet from breathing and do not fit snugly, but sick people must wear them. It is preferable for medical personnel to wear a respirator and goggles.

Increased security measures have been introduced in the border regions of Russia: all citizens arriving from the countries of the “red zone” are sent to quarantine for two weeks. If signs of infection appear, they are sent to the infectious isolation ward. In many regions, a mandatory self-isolation regime has already been introduced. Self-test for coronavirus is not provided. The COVID-19 examination is prescribed by medical personnel in the event of arrival from epidemiologically disadvantaged countries and regions of COVID-19, or close contacts with potentially and confirmed infected persons.

For patients infected with coronavirus and having other serious diseases that complicate the healing process, it is necessary to create special conditions. The chances of a successful outcome are higher when a patient is in a health care facility, staffed by trained medical personnel and equipped with the necessary equipment. Currently, Russian hospitals are being strengthened in terms of equipping with medical equipment and supplies, as well as the formation of a staff of qualified specialists. Clean rooms and infectious diseases departments are actively being equipped.

MIL'S PRO2XY ® Oxygen Generator - medical oxygen supply system
MIL'S PRO2XY ® Oxygen Generator
The most important condition for life support is the availability of a centralized medical oxygen supply system.

Such a system consists of sources of the corresponding gas, pipelines, terminal consoles and a control system.

Depending on the amount of consumed oxygen and local conditions (the presence of gaseous or liquid oxygen), the oxygen supply can be:

Oxygen generators or, as they are also called, concentrators, work on the principles of air separation, in which nitrogen is separated from oxygen. These devices produce air with an oxygen concentration of at least 93-95%. The resulting gas is quite capable of replacing medical oxygen, subject to all necessary parameters.

Gas is piped from the source to the wards, where patients are connected to the hospital’s central oxygen supply system via universal gas valves installed on CADUCEUS medical consoles.DIN medical gas quick connectors are compatible with any type of resuscitation and compressor equipment, which increases the speed of medical personnel taking measures that are vital for patients in a pandemic.

Compressor stations are used for reliable operation of modern medical equipment. That provide a stable and uninterrupted supply of compressed air of the desired pressure and high purity class. Depending on the expected flow rate, an oxyge compressor of the appropriate capacity is selected.

Medical gas supply systems require increased attention to safety; therefore, WestMedGroup specialists elaborate engineering systems projects in strict compliance with all requirements and standards and implement them in healthcare facilities using medical equipment manufactured by the company.
